The Muse: September Monthly Feature

Women With Boards

New month. New theme. New references.

I heard a story recently about a crew of friends based out of California that would wake up super early in the morning to surf, go home, eat, sleep and wake up again in the evening to surf again.

There is something that has always drawn me to adventurous brands and styles. There’s a sense of chill and laidback, I’ve always wanted to embrace but still claimed their sense of thrill and excitement. It’s my favorite balance to work with.

Naturally, in this month’s theme, we’re highlight the balance of Feminine AND Competition, Chic AND Adventurous. Because truly, there’s nothing like combing to contrasting worlds. This edition is your ticket to the most iconic, creative, and flat-out unforgettable moments that put women with boards on the map.

Let’s ride, baby.

Thoughts & Inspiration

  1. I have to start out with my favorite surf brand. ROXY is iconic to fueling female surfers with fashion. When I was younger, I wore their sunnies and their tee’s until they no longer could be worn. Their campaign Make Waves, Move Mountains was remarkable bringing together a surfer and snowboarder teaching women “there are no limits to what women can achieve when they ride with passion”.

  2. A moment for Patty McGee for the most iconic skateboarder of the 1960’s. Read about her here. It’s worth the read because she is fascinating and entered a manscape activity confidently dominating the press!

  3. When I first started thinking about this theme, I didn’t realize how many directions “board” would take me — surfboards, snowboards, skateboards, longboards, skis, diving boards, etc etc etc. They can be rode on water, land, snow, air. I was mind blown. The power of expanding awareness is recognizing all of the avenues and opportunities we get to take. Sometimes I think we think too narrow and are distracted by looking at competitors. But don’t get caught up in linear thinking. Expand and explore. Little mid-email food for thought.

  4. Women owned board brands to look into:

  5. Anyone need a coffee table book? The Surf Like A Girl publication highlight photography & stories or female surfers in one of the most beautiful. Love that I’ve seen this headline used in multiple campaigns and brands flipping the script on that old cliché.

  6. JOIN THE GRLSWIRL CLUB!!! Ooo. Idea: Create an exclusive club for those VIP’s that are obsessed with your brand. Your insiders. Your crew. Your posse.

  7. You know that tingly feeling when you break a rule? That’s what SheShreds.co embodies with their tongue-in-cheek “No Boys Allowed” mantra. Designed by women, for women, this community is all about claiming your space, owning your skills, and doing it all with a cheeky grin. As brands, it’s in our best interests to support non-profits and organizations like this! Don’t back burner that thought. Collaborate.
